Cyber Nations

Hey readers!

I've been playing a web browser-based game for a bit over a month now called Cyber Nations. It's actually very fun if you have any interest into simulation games, and wish to play one with other people. The alliance I'm in, NpO, is filled with fun people, and while it may suck in a lot of your time, you can also go a lot smoother and just progress at your own speed.

Really, it's worth checking it out.

The Dark Knight

Tonight. Updates maybe tomorrow.

Tomorrow: It was great. Really awesome. One of the best superhero movie I've seen. Though I also feel everything have been said about it, so just go and read what the critics have written.

And yeah, Heath Ledger was excellent as the Joker, but so were Aaron Eckhart and Christian Bale in their respective roles. It's just too bad that, since Ledger is dead, he won't/couldn't be coming back for another movie, if needed.

One last thing, please don't clap and laugh everytime you see the Joker on the screen. Just because his name is the Joker, doesn't mean everything he says or do is a joke. That was annoying. But hey, fanboys (and fangirls) are everywhere. And standing ovations when no one who worked on the movie is present, are pretty pointless, too.

I mean, I'm sure you don't do it at home when you watch DVDs, right? So what's up with the movie theater?

The Chasing World

So I'm still alive, and I saw the movie I previously talked about, yesterday.

The screening was at Concordia University, in the Hall Theater, which is bigger than your average theatre, with quite comfortable seats. Since the Fantasia Festival is mainly about Asian movies, and especially Japanese ones, I expected to be surrounded by video game nerds.

And was I.

First, a girl in the row in front of me received a gift by her friend. What was it? Chrono Cross for the Playstation. Nice game, actually, but it was special to see that happening in a theater. Plus, it was the Greatest Hits edition with that big and ugly flashy green label on the side. I'm a nerd at heart.

Then, I saw a guy, sitting on the ground between two sections of seats, playing with his Nintendo DS. My girlfriend then made me look around, and in about five seconds, I saw maybe ten other people playing with their DS, too. I don't mind, but I felt just like the time I saw a screening of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, when fangirls were exclaiming their joy of seeing cute characters on the screen. You know, the whole nerdy experience.

But I digress.

The movie then started. The crowd became somewhat silent, even though there's always a couple people who can't resist shouting something or laughing excessively loud at average jokes during the movie.

I don't want to talk too much about the movie, because I always feel like I'm really awful at summarizing. Plus, I kind of did that already in my previous entry, so if you need to know a bit more, just go there. All I can add is that, while it sounds overly complicated at first, everything works quite well in the end. I'd say it's a very good action/science-fiction movie with a coherent enough story, even though I almost always ask myself in these kind of bizarre Japanese movies where the hell is the international community and why is no one helping those who are getting killed for very debatable reasons. For another example of that, see Battle Royale.

So there you go, I hope you someday have a chance to see The Chasing World. And if you don't, well, your loss.

Also, the popcorn was pretty good.

Fantasia Festival

I'm willing to bet a hundred bucks you have never heard about it if you don't live in the province of Quebec. And maybe even in the Montreal metropolitan region.

So what is it, then? It's a festival created mainly for independant or foreign films of the fantastique genre. Most are from Asia, and Japan in particular, though there also are a few from Hong Kong, Thailand and even the USA. They are all world/North American/Canadian premieres, too.

And for the guilt part now, it's been around since 1996, and I've never been to it. I know, unacceptable for a student in cinema, and especially one that loves the science-fiction genre, which is closely related to the fantastique.

But things are bound to change someday. On Sunday, I'm going to see a Japanese movie called The Chasing World or Riaru oingokko, for its Canadian premiere at the Hall Theatre. It is a 2008 movie, 98 minutes long, and from the trailer I've seen, I thought it looked pretty entertaining, if anything.

To make it short, the premise of the movie is that people named Sato are getting killed or committing suicide in bizarre circumstances. And of course the main character is trying to escape his faith, while being transported in a parallel universe where a special game of tag is being held by the King. Crazy stuff.

I can't say much more about it yet, because I don't like to read too much about movies before I see them. I still like to be surprised when I'm at the theater.

Hopefully, I'll still be alive on Sunday or Monday to write a short review of it, and how my first experience at Fantasia was. If you're in or near Montreal before July 21st, you should take a look at it. Movies are shown for most of the day, and tickets are relatively inexpensive.

P.S: Here's a link to the trailer.

Who am I?

Hello there, people who are reading my wonderfully new blog. Although I'm not really sure yet what I want to do of it, as the title suggests, I'll be writing about cinema, amongst other things.

First of all, let me introduce myself a little bit. I'm a 20 year old men from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. My native tongue is French, though I don't think I'm doing bad in English either.

I'm going to start studying at the Université de Montréal next fall in Film Studies. I also studied cinema in Cegep (an in-between high school and university we have in Quebec) for two years, so I think I'm on the right track.

So it looks like I'll try to update this place as often as I can with new stuff, most likely in relation with arts.

Have fun!
